#SpookyWildernest: Our Triplet Hobbit Halloween Costumes

When Jay threw out the idea of doing Hobbits for Halloween, my entire list was scraped and I got straight to work digging for outfits and pieces to make these costumes epic.

With my kiddos have the same hair colors and styles as the characters, these roles couldn’t be anymore perfect. I started by googling Hobbit costumes, but wasn’t impressed with the cartoony bright colored appearance of most of them. To be true to the books/movies, we needed to do some more digging.

Surprisngly enough, finding good reference pictures of their outfits was a challenge. I spend a few naps watching FOOTAGE on YouTube of the movies, behind the scenes, etc in the hopes to find some good images. In many cases, I found they wore different things sometimes - their capes, for example, were often switched with one another. I pieced together what I thought was the most consistent, however, so all the work is now done for you!

I’ll do a separate section for each character in this post with links to where you can buy them. Keep in mind I make a small commission off of these links when you purchase, but it helps us continuing doing fun things like this with the kiddos, so we really appreciate it!

FRODO

The first thing I searched for were the white undershirts. It seemed all the Hobbit characters wore pretty much the same one - some kind of collarless button up that was a bit loose and almost blouse like. I ended up finding the perfect one on Shein Kids and ordered a size 100 for the boys and a size 90 for Marin. They were the perfect fit.

Frodo’s pants were very similar to the jacket he wore over his shirt, so I ended up finding what looked like a brown toddler suit on Shein once again. I decided to give it a try while hunting for something else in the meantime, but when it came, it ended up being perfect. The material was exactly what I had in mind and the color was spot on.

Like I previously mentioned, there were a few inconsistencies I saw with the Hobbits’ attire; Frodo’s in particular. Sometimes he had his vest on and sometimes he didn’t, so we stuck with the no vest look for Forrest.

The look certainly wouldn’t be complete without a Hobbit cloak, and I knew I had to venture to Etsy to find something perfect. The Cloak Closet came through with not only the quality of these cloaks, but the price! I was hard pressed to find something under $40 for a toddler cloak, but hers were only $25! For Frodo, we ordered the Standard Cloak in “Dark Green.” The brooch on his cloak was made by me, the day of Halloween, with a credit card and some scrap vinyl. I recommend getting the ones on Amazon well in advanced - they wouldn’t have come on time when I decided to start looking for them.

And of course, what kind of Frodo costume would be complete without the one ring to rule them all? This was a last minute Amazon find and I am actually BLOWN away by the quality. It’s some kind of solid shiny metal with the engravings and comes on a chain. It was perfect.

Merry

First, can you believe how much Marin actually looks like Merry? Her hair, which is taking FOREVER to grow, was the perfect length and texture to have basically the same hair as him in the movies.

Like Frodo, we got the undershirt from Shein Kids and ordered a size 90 for her.

Her pants were another Amazon find and honestly the perfect hobbit pants because they had an elastic at the ankle, which allowed us to pull them up below her knee a bit so they’d stay there - an important part of the Hobbit look. I ordered her a size 6-12M because she’s still so tiny and I didn’t want them oversized. They ended up being the perfect fit.

Her vest was also from Amazon and even came with a little bow tie haha. We ordered the 12-24M for her and the fit couldn’t have been better.

The jacket took a little big of digging. It was very difficult finding something in this color that wasn’t ridiculously outrageous. In fact, I think this was the most expensive piece purchased for these costumes at a whopping $44 dollars. It really completed the look, however, and the corduroy material was an excellent touch. I ordered her a 2T and it was slightly big - we had to roll her sleeves up a little.

Her cloak was the Standard Cloak in the color “Gray Herringbone.”

SAM

If there was ever a perfect toddler to play Samwise, it would be Wilder. He’s funny, loyal to the core, and just a wee bit chunky.

His pants were the same ones as Marin’s, just in the next size up. The undershirt was also the same as the other two as well.

Things got a bit tricky with his vest. For whatever reason, finding a toddler vest in gray with stripes proved a bit difficult. I ended up finding this one on Poshmark, which is a second hand online store. This also means there’s usually only one of them. If you search “gray pinstripe toddler vest,” you might find some decent options. Here’s a decent comparison from Shein - it comes with an entire outfit basically, but still only $20, which isn’t terrible.

Wilder’s cloak was the Standard Cloak in the color “Brown Herringbone.”

And that’s a wrap! I hope this post helped in some way and as usual, if you have any additional questions, feel free to drop them in the comments below.
